What’s the big deal about deep web search and why it is creating a huge buzz in the Internet today?

According to Internet experts, while major search engines like Google, Yahoo, and MSN provide information that are retrieved from billions of web pages, still their search technology is not capable of returning results as exactly as it is wanted specifically when it comes to what we call the deep web search.

Above image shows Prof. Juliana Freire at the University of Utah, while working on DeepPeep, an ambitious effort to index every public database online.

While Google continues to add pages-in fact another trillion of pages in the last summer–to the list of web pages it knows about, still it is said to be these are just a tip of an iceberg. Beyond what major search engines know is even vaster collection of hidden data: financial information, shopping catalogs, flight schedules-among others which remain invisible to the eyes of major search engines.

So, to be able penetrate this data, data that is beyond the reach of major search engines, a new technology called ‘deep web search engine’ must be developed. A so called search engine technology that works to analyze and understand users’ query to give the most appropriate query results which present search engines are not capable of since they use a keyword-based technology.

Google is working for this so called deep web search conundrum but it is very much cautious in every step of the way particularly in making changes in its search technology for fear of alienating its users.

There are other search technologists which are trying to develop to unveil the portal of deep web search environment. And if the development of their system become successful, it could give the most-effective and efficient search query results ever that people, companies, would consider as their greatest search engine benefit.

Google introduced another form of advertising scheme called behavioral targeting and said to be implemented starting on Wednesday by showing ads to individuals based on their previous online activity. The program has been welcomed by most of its competitors but also has ignited criticism from some privacy advocates.

Google is said to be using a cookie–a small piece of program that is integrated to a web browser–to follow users as they visit from one page to another that show ads through its Adsense program and then assign those users to categories based on the substance of the web pages they visit.

This newly-introduced advertising scheme is set to be tested with several dozens of advertisers but Google plans to widen its scope.

Meanwhile, some critics, analysts say that the Google’s venture to this so called ‘behavioral targeting’ program could bring the company’s relationship with web publishers that utilizes its advertising services into a higher degree of complexities as there are many publishers may be reluctant to give information about their user when they visit other sites.

The Magic of Touch

Posted under Web News Updates by admin on Monday 9 March 2009 at 3:06 pm

There was a time that the word touch was attributed to a human sense can only get a physiological reaction from another living thing. In this day and age, reaction to the touch can invoke responses from inanimate objects that are made in a way that the fleeting or roughest touch gets results.

The very first touch technology that I first encountered were those ATM machines that had you tap on the pane to get the desired transaction. Then the handy track pad on lap tops that had you working both sides of the brain (both hands did the work), designation the mouse as a default.

The mobile industry has gone from them analogue big-as-bricks cell phone to the Smart Phone like iPhone from Apple. These Smart phones can access the Internet, save you energy from having to click at a key several times for the letter you want and having to deal with stiff thumbs and locked phalanges because of multi-texting or setting a record for speed text or dealing with a lost stylus. The down side though of having the touch technology in a mobile phone is that the life span of the pane is relative to its misuse and heavy-handling. For the screen to be touch-able, there are layers to it that are connected to the computer which are very sensitive. One layer within the screen is called a polymeric layer and is overly reactive to humidity changes and temperature, exposure to extreme humidity changes as the chemical layers expand or moisten. I’ve had one screen conk out on me and it turned to an expanding inkblot- had it in my pocket when a sudden downpour caught me a few feet from home.

One touch technology that is helpful to almost everybody with a laptop is the multi-touch track pad. Seeing a videos on a demo track pad installed in an Asus and the Apple iMac vid-manual got me to thinking of how much time can be saved with less effort used and the promise of non complex file organization. Image selection, resizing and zooming has never been easier. The multi-touch concept for the 2009 iMac edition got rid of the button you click at the end of every touch pad, the glass touch pad is also serves as a button you can click. The same can be said for doing work using multiple windows, the iMac can give you a view of what are open, not in tabs but by minimizing the opened windows. All information and images under the mercy of your fingers- pinching and spinning without having to push buttons.

Another touch technology gadget still in the concept stage is the Optimus Tactus that also uses the sensor dependent display with a twist. The twist is the whole place where the keyboards are is replaced by a mini pane for its video mode.

The touch and sensor technology can reach new heights and it is difficult to discount some challenges application developers are facing just to test the boundaries. Just like everything else technology based the possibilities are endless.

Now can anybody tell me if the rectangular touch screen database pane in CSI Miami is real?

Google patched a loophole on its Google Doc application when they discovered a privacy glitch that inappropriately shared access to a fraction of word-processing and presentation documents stored in the company’s online Google Docs service.

In a statement Google said:

“We’ve identified and fixed a bug which may have caused you to share some of your documents without your knowledge. This inadvertent sharing was limited to people with whom you, or a collaborator with sharing rights, had previously shared a document,”

G”The issue only occurred if you, or a collaborator with sharing rights, selected multiple documents and presentations from the documents list and changed the sharing permissions. This issue affected documents and presentations, but not spreadsheets.”

The company said that the bug just affected 0.05% of the total documents stored at the site and all of the affected were notified.
