Which website Type is Your Website

A lot gets lost in translation specially in the world wide web. Popular belief is a website is a website-just that. With over 200 million and counting websites in existence, an order of website category puts a sense of order in the Internet.

The following categories are listed according to usage and content, although there are sites that are one category but have a sub-category or it may function as another website category. Listing the categories are to help you have a clearer picture of what website you would establish.

Personal Websites

These sites are created by individuals who would want to channel their lives, thoughts and accomplishments via the Internet. The pages of this site usually deal at a personal level, a virtual peep-show into someone else’s life and views on things, hobbies and pre-occupations. To distinguish this from a blog, a personal website has its own domain name, for example www.stepheniemeyer.com.

Web Logs (blogs)

Typing out significant incidents or your days experiences via a blog is a compact version of a personal website. The blog name is usually attached to the blog domain. There are several popular blogsites like Blogger.com, wordpress.com, livejournal.com etc. A blog address translates as www.dangerousmuse.blogspot.com or www.lablogueria.blogspot.com

Forums

These are websites where people converge to air their opinions and answer questions posted by other members. This is an online help group for specific niches or subjects. There are technical forums like www.googlecommunity.com.

Portals

These sites act as gateways for surfers to explore and access everything under the sun (well, almost everything). Examples of portals would be the Yahoo page or the MSN page, though both search engines both sites have a collection of topic links to go to on their home page- check: www.msn.com.

Search Engine

There are several search engines which have a noise-free site. Sites like Google.com, Gigablast.com and Cuil.com have just a search box in a field of a solid color background.

Directories and Yellow Pages

These two categories are lumped up together since their functions are the same: listings of virtual and actual businesses. These listings are arranged by area, business categories and specifics.

Information Pages

These are the sites everyone turns to for the latest in events and news. These sites are focused at bringing news and information about a niche or topic.

Company Websites

These webpages deal with a company product and information. Companies that have been established in actual before virtual have a richer content and documentation of their company (www.ferrari.com ans www.nike.com). While some build up their virtual reputation first before being able to afford an actual store-front.

E-commerce Websites

Built with the sole purpose of selling goods and services. These sites have sign-up sheets in almost every webpage or a shopping cart icon-which usually reminds you that it is a shopping web place like www.havaianas.com or www.victoriassecret.com.

Auction Websites

Also an e-commerce site but with a more diverse variety of products on auction or sale. The difference with e-commerce sites would be that a member of the site can sell anything on the site and have it bid on by auction shoppers. There are no other 2 sites that can describe this except: Amazon.com and eBay.com.

Share Sites

These websites are tricky to classify since they are also into the business of selling. These sites “share” songs and video/movies for a free or for members an annual fee. These sites benefit both the artist and the share promoter, the former produces the goods while the latter markets it. These would be i-Stock, PhotoBucket or i-Tunes.

Social Networks

These are websites and pages that connect its users at a personal level. Where products and services can also be promoted but not necessarily sold. These sites require membership and logins, making it a tightly knit network of users. eg. www.facebook.com or www.myspace.com.

Tip on figuring out where you fit in:

To be able to know what kind of website you are going to need, defining the purpose for your site is one of the first questions anyone would ask themselves.
